This idea is at the center of betterSoil’s new digital presence. In our revamped homepage, we outline what betterSoil is all about, what we offer and our expert approach to soil health. Our new dedicated Farm Assistant landing page takes a closer look at our digital decision-support tool. Taken together, these pages illustrate the unique offering by betterSoil - the blend of soil science, satellite data, and field knowledge to inform better agricultural decisions.
Why soil health matters beyond the field
Soil is easy to overlook when we focus on crops, but it’s the foundation of agricultural production. Around 570 million farms operate worldwide, with roughly 1.3 billion workers employed in agri-food companies. Beyond that, more than 95% of global food production depends on soil, while 720 million people suffer from hunger (2024 data), which is why soil health is directly linked with global food security.
Soil health and fertility are not only important for environmental reasons but also for the impact on food production, farmers’ livelihoods, and agricultural supply chains. On the other hand, each farm field is different, varying in the amounts of sand, clay, silt, pH, and soil fertility, even within one agriculture area.
That’s where our work begins. Founded in 2021, betterSoil helps farmers, food processing firms and manufacturers across the agricultural supply chain through soil science, satellite data, regenerative agriculture knowledge, R&D and advisory services. We aim to help make soil management and soil health measurable, profitable, and scalable while supporting more resilient, climate-ready agricultural systems.
Farm Assistant: digital support for healthier soils
The Farm Assistant translates betterSoil’s soil health approach into a digital tool, initially developed for potato growers. By combining soil science, satellite data, and technology, the intelligent farm app helps users manage the soil health and crop planning process. It is designed to turn complex soil and field information into practical insight that support better agricultural decisions.
Key tools in the Farm Assistant
The Farm Assistant brings together three key tools that help users assess soil conditions, plan crop rotations, and explore different management scenarios.
Soil fertility map – using satellite imagery and comprehensive data to help users understand field conditions, including soil type, pH, and fertility patterns. It is available for all crops and farming systems. This feature is for all crops.
Crop rotation recipes – providing long-term crop sequences from one to five years, matched field conditions and user goals for cash crops. It is currently for potato production only.
Crop rotation simulator – enabling users to know the effect of different crop rotation scenarios on soil health, nitrogen balance and economic costs. It is available for all crops.
