Every year, soil erosion removes an estimated 25–40 billion tonnes of fertile topsoil worldwide, reducing the soil's ability to store water, cycle nutrients, and support crop production. In addition, around 33% of the world's soils are already moderately to highly degraded, limiting their capacity to absorb rainfall and sustain healthy ecosystems. These alarming figures highlight why protecting and restoring soil health has never been more important.
Imagine two fields after a heavy rainfall. In the first field, all the rainwater drains fast, washing away the precious topsoil. In the second field, the rainwater infiltrates slowly, remains within the soil, and nourishes plants for days and weeks. The major difference between both fields is healthy soil. Healthy soil behaves like a massive sponge. Rich in organic materials, microorganisms, earthworms, and plant roots, it captures rainwater, stores it, and replenishes groundwater.

Water is becoming increasingly scarce in many parts of the world. At the same time, climate change is causing intense rainfall and longer dry spells. In this regard, healthy soils can help address both issues by storing rainwater for later use. Instead of flowing away as runoff, it helps plants to grow and recharge groundwater. This means less irrigation is needed, and more water is available during dry weather.
Drought is one of the serious challenges facing agriculture in the modern world. Plants in unhealthy or compacted soils dry up rapidly since such soils cannot retain a sufficient amount of water. In contrast, healthy soils act as natural water reservoirs. They store rainfall and gradually release moisture to plant roots, which helps the crops to endure longer without water. The capacity to cope with drought conditions is known as drought resilience. The healthier the soils are, the more capable they become at withstanding drought, protecting harvests, and securing food production.

World Water Day, observed on 22nd March 2026, brought together global efforts under the theme of “Water and Gender” to highlight how clean water access empowers women and girls. The campaign promoted gender equality and women’s role in managing the world’s shared water resources. Even though rivers, lakes, and oceans often receive the most attention so far, it is equally important to recognize the importance of healthy soils. Without healthy soils, much of the rainfall would simply runoff instead of being stored in the ground.
