Reframing Agricultural Attitudes Following The Climate Crisis
The effects of climate change cannot be ignored. Extreme heat and severe weather events have adverse effects on public health and the wider environment. With growing changes to weather norms, we must reconsider the importance of efficiency against resilience when considering crop yields.

Effects of Climate Change on Crop Yields
The 2023 AR6 report by The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is clear in its message that the rising temperatures caused by the climate crisis will have dangerous effects on the health of the planet and human well-being. Whilst there are serious issues we will face due to the increasingly severe weather we will experience, the effects of climate change on the agricultural industry poses a threat to our resources and economy. Studies theorise the economic impact of global warming could cause crop loss of more than $20 billion dollars a year. This crop loss will lead to a reduction in accessible foods, a hit to the global economy, and the reduction of funds accessible to farmers across the globe. Farmers will feel the effects of the changes in temperature and increased rainfall on their usual yield and will understand the dangers of more extreme weather. However, it is difficult to adapt in the current climate, as we will need a shift towards consideration of the resilience of crops under severe weather conditions.
Our Current Attitudes towards Crops
Crop production traditionally focuses on maximum yield under perfect conditions because for farmers and stakeholders the highest rates of production will mean the best economic outcomes. The potential loss of output in securing more resilient systems may drive farmers and stakeholders away from this direction, maximising profit in the short term and avoiding the immediate costs of change. Furthermore, it may be easier to focus on things that are more controllable than extreme shifts in weather. Whilst farming and agriculture are dependent on the weather, personal experience will dictate the level of threat we perceive due to the climate crisis. For some, extreme weather conditions may actually help production, so studies on the negative impacts may not affect them. However, the scientific evidence put forward about the increasingly severe weather events we will experience, in hotter heatwaves, in increased rainfall, in the raised risk of storms calls us to rethink our practices and to consider the resilience of crops in the future.
A Shift in Our Perspective
There is a trend of shifting perspectives in farming and agriculture. It is also important to consider crop resilience due to climate change, because it is clear that extreme weather events will continue to affect the planet and our agricultural practices. By working towards crop resilience under more severe weather, we can achieve long-term benefits for farming and for the planet. Adaptation and response to this threat will allow a dynamic approach to farming under changing weather conditions, which can be more cost effective over time. Prioritising productivity is encouraged by farmers and stakeholders, leading to more focus in change of infrastructure and improving biodiversity. These changes, whether climate driven or not, successfully use improved sciences to ensure the best practice in a changing world.
Change Can Start on a Personal Level
n important consideration when debating a change in farming practices and adaptation to climate issues is the fact of scale. It follows that bigger farms with higher income will be able to adapt much more easily than smaller farms with a smaller yield. There are a multitude of barriers that may prevent from being able to take big actions to prioritise crop resilience and to respond to the threats we face in more extreme weather. However, there are small scale actions that can be taken to prioritise climate resilience and to develop forwards. Putting time towards research on a local or global scale can always be helpful, and farmer-to-farmer knowledge can be shared to help understand the best ways of adaptation. Moreover, a prioritisation of soil health is a sustainable way to increase yield and to lower costs. With healthy soil, there is less need for chemical treatments which contribute to climate change, and thereby to more extreme weather events. With proper soil management, soil fertility will flourish meaning less escape of harmful gases into the atmosphere and an increase of sustainable production.

The climate crisis will continue to have devastating effects for agriculture and planetary health, but there are ways to adapt to this and to ensure resilience. It is increasingly important to think about the ways in which your own practices can develop alongside these more extreme weather events, and ways in which we can use science to combat our own output of harm.
